Let’s make a structured mess

We all want to let go of our strictness to ourselves, but even though you could just drop everything, it can be scary. A lot of people want to have a start point, a handle or a push in the back. It doesn’t have to be big, something small can give you a whole mountain of ideas.

With just a few simple products you can unlock limitless ideas and break those strict rules we hold ourselves to. For this exercise we are going to use: Acrylic paint sprays, a spray bottle of water, a hole punch or simple scissors, a piece of sturdy plastic and heavy card.

First we are going to make a stencil using our plastic and hole punch or scissors. If you are using a hole punch this will be really easy. Just create a pattern using one of the two supplies When you’re happy with what your pattern looks like, you made a diy stencil!

Start with your first layer of sprays. Choose a color you want in the back of your piece. Spray it in a few areas and spray some water over it. Look at the color explosion happening before your eyes. Isn’t it beautiful? If you move your card a bit the color will move even more. Once you’re satisfied with the look. Dry your layer and start adding another one.

The more layers you use, the more depth your piece will have in the end ( and the more you can enjoy the moving colors ). You can even use a couple of colors in the same layer and see them interact with each other.

Now when you spray the paint through the stencil you can elevate your piece to a whole new level. If you want to make it pop just use a contrasting color, or a much darker or lighter color. Just have fun with it, because in the end it will always have the beauty of simplicity.
